Under Cover of Night ~ December 14th-20th, 2015

“If you’re frightened of dying and you’re holding on, you will see devils tearing your life away. If you have made your peace, then the devils are really angels freeing you from the earth.”

– an interpretation of the works of Meister Eckhart from the film Jacob’s Ladder

This week is the darkest week of the year. Thankfully, the tension between Saturn in Sagittarius and Neptune in Pisces is finally easing, meaning that the storm of unrest that brings no answers will begin to mellow out. The nights have been growing steadily longer and longer, stretching the ratio of darkness to light. Next Monday, December 21st, this momentum of darkness will reach its crescendo at the Winter Solstice. But until then, the last galloping legs of the Sagittarius season will drag you onward into the barren night, lost in visions of the future! Whether that future is a verdant paradise or a scorching hellscape is entirely dependent on you.

Under cover of night, your psyche reveals its insides. Think of this darkness at the end of the year like an inkblot upon which you may project your biggest imaginings. This week, think of your experiences as an extended Rorschach test: a time when the shadows will reveal to you the order and disorder of your cognition, personality, and motivations.

If there are devils, know that their vicious nature was born inside of you. If there is bitterness, then you are tasting your own resentment. And if there are angels, then you will know that you are primed and ready for the dawning of the light!

I. Princess of Pentacles(reversed) – II. The Devil – III. Queen of Pentacles(reversed)

Monday/Tuesday – The Princess of Pentacles (reversed)

At the beginning of the week, the Princess of Pentacles reversed urges you to change your approach to something important in your life which has been holding you back from progress. This might indicate a shift in morality, a change in opinions, or a confession of guilt. Use the experiences of frustration early in this week to find the will and the humility to admit error and change your tactics.

On Monday, December 14th, your intentions for this lunation cycle will be hugely expanded by the Sun’s square with Jupiter in Virgo. The New Moon in Sagittarius last Friday also squared Jupiter in Virgo, lending a weary dissonance to the holiday spirit of idealism and hope. With the Sun and Moon making the same square to Jupiter just a few days apart, there will be many themes of healing and a demanding process of learning that will be repeated. Let this square between the Sun and Jupiter expand the visionary potential of the New Moon and bring into order some of the parts of your life that remain incoherent or out of control.

Also on Monday, the Moon in Capricorn will sextile Neptune in Pisces: the imagination may run wild! Under an influence like this both meditation and prayer will feel deeply moving rather than stiff and unyielding. This can become a great source of inspiration, but also acts as a momentary detriment to whatever solid plans or new routines you are trying to enact.

tumblr_mgd210G5WU1qf4hg2o1_500.jpgWednesday/Thursday: The Devil

The middle of the week is hugely important for discovering more about your internal conditions, your current beliefs and your true values. The Devil is a card that evokes fear and this reaction is one of the intended purposes of the Devil card, so do not try to avoid the feelings that come up. Facing the fear that enslaves you is the healing intention of the Devil.

In regards to this week’s reading, the Devil teaches that repressed thoughts and feelings do not disappear, but instead mirror back to you, amplifying their negative expression.

Suddenly-Last-Summer-1959-elizabeth-taylor-4703481-799-423 All your thoughts and emotions engender your psychic reality, and if you do not recognize your own hand in the creation of the shadow-sides of experience, then a devil may appear, interfering with your sense of self and all of your conscious intentions.

You must encounter the darkest and most unconscious parts of the self in order to maintain a true sense of autonomy that is not subject to escapism, fear, and manipulation from anything.

“The only thing that burns in hell is the part of you that won’t let go of your life: your memories, your attachments.” -Jacob’s Ladder

On Wednesday, the Moon will be in Pisces, conjuncting Neptune late in the night. The Moon will also be squared to Saturn, which is an aspect that creates tension and conflict, but may also allow you to interpret your dreams as aspects of conscious reality. Signs and omens and synchronicities will abound.  An excellent activity under this influence would be to write down your dreams, for not only will you be able to recall them with greater detail, you will also be likely to find that the dream contains a vivid revelation.

dreamer (1)On Thursday, Venus in Scorpio will sextile Pluto in Capricorn, making it a favorable day to have an intimate connection with others, which may change the status you have with friends, family or consorts significantly. (Love becomes deeper or business relations become tighter.) If you sincerely offer yourself, someone will sincerely reciprocate.

It is also a good day to have a therapy session of some kind. Conversations will veer towards deep truths and will lead you to realizations that will aid you in releasing the devils that haunt you.

Friday/Saturday/Sunday- The Queen of Pentacles (reversed)

The Queen of Pentacles reversed is a card that asks you tend to yourself this week before tending to anyone else. There will be lots of time for putting others first next week, but this is an introverted time to heal and contemplate.

Even for yourself, do not try to overstretch. If you have been facing the demons inside, you can not simultaneously be fully engaged with the mundane world. The Queen of Pentacles asks that you focus on the quality of your inner world before the New Year so that the quality of your manifest world can flourish in the months to come. 01500-2t

Pull the weeds, flush out the poisons, and plant things in your life that are beautiful for beauty’s sake.

On Friday, the Moon will enter the sign of Aries, and that offers a little extra energy to anyone who has been suffering from inertia.

On Saturday, December 19th, Mercury in Capricorn will conjunct Pluto in Capricorn at 14 degrees. You may find that the effect of this transit deeply magnifies your powers of persuasion, and that is because the power of your words will be profoundly enhanced. Rather than wasting time attempting to overpower others, use the energy wisely to empower yourself.

With a little extra magic in the words that you use, what might you do to improve your life? What might you grow in the garden of your mind?

(write a letter…a journal entry… an introduction to a novel…make a sigil…try self-hypnosis)

You should also know that when Mercury goes retrograde in January, this conjunction with Pluto will happen again. Therefore, whatever deep work you begin today will be revisited again later. If the truth is not yet known to you regarding a certain issue, it will be revealed before January is over.

The contemplation of Saturday will explode into some kind of  revelation on Sunday, when Mercury squares Uranus in Aries at 16 degrees. That sense of a golden tomorrow will overtake you! There will be excitement about the possibilities for the upcoming New Year. Since Sunday is also the second to last day of Sagittarius, it is a perfect time to gulp down as much optimism as you can handle before settling down into Capricorn’s austere season of accomplishment through struggle.

By the end of the weekend, you will feel the imminence of the Winter Solstice as a sparkling jewel upon your crown of joy!

… For A Little Peace of Mind ~ November 16th – 22nd

This is the final week of Scorpio season and the time of falling down deep dark emotional wells is not yet over. The overall feeling this week is expressed perfectly through the way that John Lennon once sang, You know I’d give you everything I’ve got for a little peace of mind.” There is thrashing angst and then lilting submission to reality as it is rather than as it should be. With idealism so shaken, pools of sorrow may threaten to drown out the will to love.

Over the weekend, like an archangel on an apocalyptic night, the influence of Sagittarius will displace this primal dread with spiritual liberation. By experiencing some miraculous compassion or profound beauty in the world, inspiration will reawaken. The blinding veils will burn away and a thirst for communion with the divine will enliven an instinctual motion within.

I. Seven of Cups II. The Tower III. The Queen of Wands
I. Seven of Cups II. The Tower III. The Queen of Wands

Monday/Tuesday – The Seven of Cups

Paramahansa_Yogananda_Standard_PoseIn his book,
Autobiography of a Yogi, Paramahansa Yogananda says, “The power of unfulfilled desires is the root of all man’s slavery.” This statement perfectly summarizes the themes of the beginning of the week and the meaning of the Seven of Cups. This card describes the experience of having too many desires to make any significant progress towards fulfilling anything. It also reveals how emotional energy can become misdirected into vapid fantasies. Cognitive dissonance and narcissism are the ties that bind us to illusions.

The beginning of this week is a window of opportunity to discover how many of your most precious fantasies are nothing but parasitic delusions. You may feel haunted by some of your recent decisions and actions, but the last throes of Scorpio are meant to be dark and psychologically disturbing. Let the ghosts of the past and the fantasies of the future put on a spectacle, and in doing so, reveal their emptiness to you.

On Tuesday, the Sun in Scorpio will be conjunct Mercury in Scorpio, enlivening mental powers for good and ill. Considering the sign of Scorpio, the beginning of the week will be inflamed by primal desires: sex, death, and money. Remember that secrets are like weapons, able to aid or destroy depending upon intention. Therefore, learn to use the power of secrecy wisely. There will be an equal amount of investigative prowess in your thoughts as there is restlessness and irritation. Lost in an intense head trip, you may discover that certain questions will never have a satisfactory answer. Make peace with this fact.

Wednesday/Thursday: The Tower

On Wednesday, Neptune will station direct in Pisces after being in retrograde since June. Neptune stations are a disorienting experience, best described by words like warbling, tilting, and dizzying. Suffice it to say that after this midweek confusion, there will be a stronger current that will carry aspects of the inner world into the outer world, meaning there may be more fruitful artistic endeavors, magical rituals, or divinatory practices. You might be led by signs and feelings, following all the way to some unforeseen destination or sense of purpose. Though Neptune is associated with dreams and visionary experiences, consider that this shift in energy is as neutral towards your personal ambitions as the changing tides of the ocean. In order to benefit from it, one must have a safe vessel, extensive knowledge of how to travel, and the humility to accept the will of the winds.

Illustration by Gustav Dore for Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner
Illustration by Gustav Dore for Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner

This Neptune station is amplifying the square with Saturn in Sagittarius and so the Neptunian images of mystical oceanic voyages are not complete without recollections of a helpless ship lost on the stormy waves. Remember what Odysseus had to learn when he denied Poseidon’s power.

The Tower is a card that illustrates a time when all that was once secure wavers and dissolves. Total groundlessness forces one to fall and all that remains is trust. The Tower is therefore a great spiritual teacher, creating a moment of peril in order to inspire faith and trust and flexibility. Imagine a cat landing on its feet, not just securely but with buoyant grace and in perfect defiance of fear. It is this feline flexibility that the middle of week will teach you.

Friday/ Saturday/Sunday: The Queen of Wands

On Friday, Mercury will enter Sagittarius, lifting the mind towards the light of self-realization and philosophical inquiry. The following words from Yogananda will crystallize into wisdom that you carry within and share with others.

“Forget the past. The vanished lives of all men are dark with many shames. Human conduct is ever unreliable until man is anchored in the Divine. Everything in future will improve if you are making a spiritual effort now.”

This wisdom will be especially useful as Venus in Libra squares Pluto in Capricorn, which may create overwrought tension about sex and money in our relationships. Piety and abstinence are not the solution to greed and violence. This is a time to meditate and observe thoughts and feelings carefully, so that actions are not made unconsciously.

anne_of_kievThe Queen of Wands shows that you possess the will to endure the agonies and ecstasies of life with the glistening prowess of a panther. The Moon will be in Aries on Saturday, lending a fresh and igniting desire to clean up, begin again, start-over, and revive. Then on Sunday, the Sun will enter Sagittarius, finally bringing a new bubble of mirth and optimism back into the collective consciousness. With the Sun in Sagittarius, an odyssey of spiritual discovery can begin, one that involves some fun and adventure. What are your BIG questions about life? What do you want to know before you die? This curiosity is the essence of Sagittarius and it will benefit you to explore your own need for consciousness expansion. This weekend, the urge to taste something new in life that offers novelty and invigorates your passion for learning will become overwhelming! Follow that wanderlust! As the Queen of Wands, you stand as a herald of divine consciousness, burning as brightly as the stars.

The Year Has Grown Old ~ November 2nd – 8th

My November Guest by Robert Frost

“My Sorrow, when she’s here with me,
Thinks these dark days of autumn rain
Are beautiful as days can be;
She loves the bare, the withered tree;
She walks the sodden pasture lane.

Her pleasure will not let me stay. . .”

It is November and it can no longer be ignored that the year has grown old. Its vision of the world grows dimmer every day and the memories of its joys and disappointments may begin to haunt you. The choice to let the year grow old gracefully or to let it sink into sorrow is up to you. The melancholy of the year’s imminent death comes with the feeling that so much has been left undone and so much left unsaid. But unrealized dreams need not stiffen into regret. Rather, let these dreams fall like the leaves from the trees, enriching the soil for next year’s season of optimism and growth.

november 1st-8th
I. Eight of Wands II. Ace of Cups III. Three of Pentacles

Monday/Tuesday: Eight of Wands

On Monday, November 2nd, a lot of action occurs! The eight of wands implies the emergence of the rushing force of human will! Mercury will exit Libra and will enter into the turbulent water sign of Scorpio. Having spent two months in Libra, when Mercury changes signs, a bubble will burst in terms of idealistic intellectualism, giving way to a flood of acceptance for the obsessive, neurotic and completely unfair aspects of life. Meanwhile, the Moon in Leo will square Mercury, lending a certain charismatic warmth to your meditations upon power, corruption and lies. Imagine something like the pleasure of reading a book on the JFK Assassination with more interest in the motivation behind the murder than the lack of justice that the incident implies.

Mars_and_Venus_MAN_Napoli_Inv9248 (1)

Monday and Tuesday also feature a conjunction between Mars and Venus in Virgo, a sexual union of planetary energies that serves to enhance your ability to use both intuitive and rational faculties to interpret the senses. When Venus and Mars are conjunct in Virgo, both the masculine and feminine principles within yourself are merged into one being, meaning you may be able to have much more insight into how to temper some of your obsessions and heal your relationships with your lovers, co-workers, and/or family. Even if this year did not live up to your expectations, this is a great time to settle the score and find some peace of mind.

Wednesday/Thursday: The Ace of Cups

The Ace of Cups is one of the best cards in the deck, for it foretells of emotional fulfillment and a renewal of love. The Moon will be in Virgo in the middle of the week, continuing to illuminate the lessons learned from the Mars/Venus conjunction. There should be a much greater understanding of what is healthy in your life and therefore, what should be nurtured. True love and true passion rise to the surface, while mere affinities and neurotic obsessions will ask to be cleared away. Let the loose ends go and begin to take better care of what is worth keeping. Shakespeare’s Sonnet 116 exquisitely describes the clear-minded truth that will be guiding you during the middle of this week.Love Goddess (1)

“. . . Love is not love

Which alters when it alteration finds,

Or bends with the remover to remove:

O no; it is an ever-fixed mark,

That looks on tempests, and is never shaken. . .”

With such a lucid philosophy regarding where love really is in your life, it is assured that you will be gifted with a much stronger sense of romance, family, and creative fulfillment.

Friday/Saturday/Sunday: The Three of Pentacles

On Friday, Mercury in Scorpio will trine Neptune in Pisces. This is a day to dive deeply into something that requires imagination and probing intellect: such as, music theory, occult philosophy, or even astrology. Bear in mind that the 3 of Pentacles indicates that whatever you choose to focus upon will be something that is laying down a strong foundation for a long-term cycle of growth. You are establishing something, investing in something, and building something for the future. Remember that your health is by far the most valuable wealth you can possess, from now until the day you die. The Moon, still transiting Virgo will make conjunctions with Jupiter, then Mars and finally Venus. Imagine a lot of powerful and inspiring choices coming your way, all of which are allowing you to steer your life in a direction which cultivates your health as the foundation of joy, leisure, and creativity.

Though weekends are usually associated with letting loose and letting go, expect this weekend to bring an opportunity to gain some kind of expertise or to make some kind of connection that
you really need to move forward. This weekend is about refining the ambiance of your life, which will be made so much easier when Venus enters Libra on Sunday! Libra is one of the signs ruled by Venus, and it is where she is most social, most elegant, and most poised. Use your leisure time and your leisure activities to cultivate a glimmering sense of destiny. At the end of any year, it is time to let your soul dance in the firelight, brightened by the dream of eternal summer and burning with the desire for miracles.

Dream Within A Dream ~ October 26 -November 1

Dream Within A Dream by Edgar Allan Poe

“…I stand amid the roar

Of a surf-tormented shore,

And I hold within my hand

Grains of the golden sand—

How few! yet how they creep

Through my fingers to the deep,

While I weep—while I weep!

O God! can I not grasp

Them with a tighter clasp?

O God! can I not save

One from the pitiless wave?

Is all that we see or seem

But a dream within a dream?”

220px-Edgar_Allan_Poe_2This beautiful poem by Edgar Allan Poe, one of the greatest American writers of all time, is a melancholy meditation for this week of Halloween. Though this poem contains no murder, mayhem or monsters, Dream Within a Dream bleeds from the heart of the poet, evoking the essence of what the Scorpionic season is all about: the visceral concrescence of life and death.

This pain, made into poetic song, is from the knowledge of how easily dreams are lost to us upon waking, how quickly hope fades into despair, and how illusory the narrative you think you are enacting in life truly is. The poet is 220px-PrematureBurial-Clarketortured by the realization that life is but a handful of memories, and that it is only in the dreams wrought from memories that life exists at all. Time is slipping through his grasping hands and each moment erodes away the last one until there is nothing left. The agony of the poet’s grief is one shared by all those who realize how indefinite are the boundaries between life and death; dreams and reality.

Remember this week that Halloween was not always about cheap candy and binge-drinking. It was once a time to honor the spirits of the dead, to devote some of your mortal life to their memory, merging a divided world of duality into a holistic continuum. This week will be one to allow some solemnity and devotion back into your consciousness as you contemplate the mystery of mysteries!

Monday/Tuesday – The Ace of Wands

The Ace of Wands indicates that at the beginning of the week you are full of power and energy. With the Moon in Aries on Monday, the element of fire will ignite your motivation to succeed and forge ahead! The Moon will become full after midnight, illuminating the wee hours of Tuesday morning with the light of the Full Moon in Taurus! Let your senses seduce you into a state of purifying enjoyment.
Mandala-Coloring-Pages-to-Print This is an excellent time to work on stabilizing a relationship or to make a more solid environment for your professional endeavors. If you have been a wanderer in the desert, chasing mirages in the relentless sun, this full moon will finally lead you to an oasis!

Wednesday/Thursday – The Empress

On Wednesday, the Moon is still in Taurus and has filled you with a profound sense of power and beauty! The Moon is trined to Venus in Virgo and then

Mars in Virgo. “How does your garden grow?” This is the question you will be empowered to answer on this day with ingenious acuity! What is healthy and steady in your life? What are your most abundant sources of nutrients? (think mental, physical and spiritual) To devote yourself to prosperity and fertility, surround yourself with sensual forms of beauty: fruit, flowers, jewelry, perfume, etc..etc..

On Thursday, the Moon in Gemini will square Venus and Mars in Virgo as well as Neptune in Pisces. Herein lies the philosophical inquiry that begins to lead you down the path of wondering, fearing, doubting, and dreaming dreams of exquisite horror.

Friday/Saturday/Sunday: Death

Devil’s Night, Halloween and All Soul’s Day!

The Sun in Scorpio will be trined Neptune in Pisces, lending a quivering sensitivity to your emotional experience this weekend. In addition, the Moon will be in Cancer, completing the water trine and giving you a full range of feelings to be summoned and performed! This will be great for getting into the spirit of the holiday, but it will come with a lot of melodramatic tendencies as well. Watch out for people becoming possessed by their passions and acting like there is no tomorrow!

Halloween is always intense and emotionally raw, but powerful transformations of the spirit can occur when you submit to the darkness and let it flow through you. This weekend is the time to be swept away by the night, whether that be in reverie or in ritual is up to you. At this time, the boundaries between Life and Death are shadowy and vague, rendering your senses quite vulnerable to new impressions of what your story really is.

Le Serpent by Gabriel Ferrier
Le Serpent by Gabriel Ferrier

This weekend is about the release of repression, manifesting in unexpected psychic experience or emotional upheaval! Hedonism is a devotional act on Halloween, so devote yourself to it in your own way with a fair amount of caution and a marvelous sense of adventure. The urge to wear a disguise in order to explore sexuality, evil and altered states of consciousness is a sign of your ravenous desire to reverse and release your societal conditioning. This is healthy and necessary, though if you are suddenly dragged into a black-hole of drunkenness and sexual depravity that causes you regret, take this as a sign that you need to release your repression more often. Seek more revelatory and ecstatic experiences throughout the upcoming year.

Halloween weekend is a time when your thoughts and experiences will reveal to you the continuum of experience that is often ignored. Memories of fun and merriment give us pain in the present. Therefore, sorrow is born from joy and evil is revealed as a consequence of goodness. As if from a dream, you will awaken from this tumultuous night, with only the faintest glimmer of its wisdom to guide you on until next year’s encounter with these shadows.

Beautiful and Free ~ September 28th – October 4th

In the wake of Sunday’s total lunar eclipse, you may feel stimulated and full of questions about what just happened. If you peruse metaphysical or New Age blogs, even in the most peripheral way, you have no doubt encountered the myriad of interpretations for this eclipse. No matter what the spiritual interpretation, Sunday’s culmination of the tetrad of Blood-Moon lunar eclipses, was an event that most of the world was simultaneously interested in and there was great power in that. dance

What is primal and essential about eclipses, without interference from specific cultural narratives, is that they bring forth a sense of deep cosmic time and of being in tune with cosmic timing. Eclipses are an open arms invitation for every sentient being to become one with the rhythm within and without. Think of the euphoric sensation experienced while listening to music and dancing. There is a profound sense of release and relief in the moment of becoming one with rhythm!

Whatever creative outpouring results from that experience of becoming one with rhythm can be called by any number of terms: ascension, purification, or satori. Call it whatever feels good to you and remember that even after these intense communions with the universe, life goes on complete with boredom and struggle. However, music, once imprinted, never really leaves one’s heart and that is the eternal gift of the eclipse cycle that just ended. You have been given the gift of a new rhythm.

This week will be an interesting beginning to a new era.

Tarot Reading for September 28th-October 4th, 2015

Monday/Tuesday: The King of Pentacles

In the wake of the eclipse, you have been empowered by a driving force of motivation.  For Monday and most of Tuesday, the Moon remains in Aries, the sign of the lunar eclipse. The fire of your will to individuate, express, and ignite your dreams into manifestation are very much alive! Whatever you released to the total eclipse has given you a sense of newness and freshness in your thinking. Following your inspiration and instincts will be more natural in these first couple of days. Allow yourself to feel guided and protected.

Wednesday/Thursday: The Queen of Swords

The Sun in Libra and Mercury retrograde in Libra will go conjunct on Wednesday, giving you the insight to work through a linguistic or diplomatic problem in your life. There is a brooding internalized power building strength inside you that will allow you to develop a previously unrealized strategy for solving an issue that you probably thought you needed more help with. Feel free of that burden! Thursday marks the first day of October, which prepares you for the encroaching darkness of the fall season and you may feel that first fluttering sensation of the approaching holidays. In the spirit of the Libra Sun, cultivating the proper disciplines in your life for ‘right speech’ and the ‘right action’ that follows will be highly favored.

Friday/Saturday/Sunday: The Tower

The weekend does not bring disaster and cataclysm. Quite the opposite in fact. Despite the first feelings evoked by the image of The Tower, this is actually a card which urges you to see that you have liberated yourself from an element of darkness that had been holding you prisoner. In most cases, imprisonment is a mental state of ignorance. The lightening blasting through the Tower is the Truth that sets you free.

One can be imprisoned most effectively through rigid belief systems. Consider that the natural state of belief should allow for growth and change and fun. But when belief becomes too rigid, its power becomes malignant: learning comes to a screeching halt and dogmatic systems of “thought” emerge as the sour and bitter fruit of consciousness.

Consider how many ideologies and beliefs you were conditioned into through family, religion, mass media, and politics etc… You can endlessly deconstruct the amount of behaviors and actions that have become routine in your life based upon “cultural programming”, and that deconstructionist lens can often present a grim and depressing sense of feeling fated to remain forever an inculcated subject of propaganda and politics. This is the GOOD news of The Tower card, for it depicts the rigidity of beliefs being destroyed to make way for a fluid and creative state of mind. The Tower is that “hand of god” which frees you from your ignorance and enables you to expand your compassion, your talents, and your spiritual evolution. This weekend is a time to feel beautiful and free!

From its own wreck the thing it contemplates;

This is alone Life, Joy,

It All Begins In Fire ~ September 27th Total Lunar Eclipse in Aries

It All Begins In Fire

“Opposition brings concord. Out of discord comes the fairest harmony.” – Heraclitus

On September 27th-28th, 2015 (depending on where you live in the world) there will be a total lunar eclipse in the fire sign of Aries! The visual phenomenon of an eclipse occurs when the Earth hangs in the middle of the radiance and reflection between the Sun and the Moon, casting its own shadow. This specific lunar eclipse will be upon a Super Moon, meaning that this Moon will be closer to the Earth than any other we have seen this year! Make an effort to see it because you will definitely feel it! This event will furiously burn away something which has been impeding you and will usher in a new era of self-awareness. Aries is a fire sign that represents the ignition of consciousness experienced at birth so this is a “rebirth” eclipse in a BIG way!

“A Heavenly Blessing” – original hand painted mandala by Mark Golding

This event completes this month’s cycle begun on September 13th when a partial solar eclipse occurred in Virgo. It also is the culmination of a much larger cycle, for this Sunday night’s eclipse will be the last in a “tetrad” — referring to four total lunar eclipses that have been occurring in six-month intervals for the last 18 months. Think back over the last year and a half and reflect upon what has been in dynamic flux. Now, consider what can be released from your life with great gusto and intention!

From an astrological point of view, something significant that you have been working on, healing, or bringing into manifestation is about to transform! There will be an end that ushers in new conditions in ‘concord’ with your current evolutionary needs. Look at where 4 degrees Aries is on your natal chart to determine what areas of your life are most likely to be opening up to experiencing a great departure that will lead you to a new era in your life.

Autumn_flowers_(10376232316)In the case of this “Harvest Moon-Blood Moon-Super Moon-Culmination of the Tetrad-Total Eclipse”, suffice it to say that it will be a miraculous moment to sacrifice something to the transmutational energies. This will be a spectacular demonstration of your ability to release an unnecessary condition in your life, making the soil fertile once more for the growth of emotional fulfillment, opportunity, romance, friendship, creativity, finances etc… etc…

This great flourishing will be in an area where you most desire it if you gently allow your own will to mingle with the transformational cycles of nature!

Sunday’s total lunar eclipse in Aries beautifully exemplifies ancient wisdom of the transformational cycles, for a lunar eclipse represents the power of catalyzing change through opposing energies. “Opposition brings concord…”  Moreover, this eclipse will be in Aries, the first sign in the Zodiac, characterized by the element of cardinal fire associated with the light of consciousness received upon birth and which rejuvenates all life every spring. In the Zodiac, everything begins in fire!

Heraclitus of Ephesus was the most influential of the Pre-Socratic philosophers and he based his wisdom upon understanding the nature of transformation and dynamic flux. Heraclitus defined the underlying governance of nature as an “ever-living fire”, whose incessant transformations are the essence of the cycle of life and death.

In his view, fire constitutes and symbolizes the omnipresent processes of nature and the light of intelligence (the “logos”). Therefore, as the source of all life and all thought, fire is what lends us the illumination of self-discovery and transformation!

So, in the heat of this total eclipse feel yourself burning bright! Ignite that inner spark and courageously blaze a new trail for yourself! You will be on fire!

I. The Chariot II. King of Cups III. 8 of Wands

The Chariot indicates that the beginning of this week is poised upon a precipice of positive change, but perhaps you feel lost in thought and paralyzed by inertia. Deep meditation upon the new direction you are taking should be an important part of this transition. With all the transitional planetary influences that favor chaos and creativity, you must become your own oracle. Your job is to create the space inside your heart for the Muses to enter and guide your forward motion into the unknown and uncertain future: hear them, feel them, commune with them. With the Muses on your side, joyful success is certain for they are the spirits of divine inspiration. No great artist or scholar in ancient times ever failed to invoke the Muses before beginning a great work. You may do the same in your endeavors to create new conditions, new narratives, and new feelings in your life. Let the Muses speak to you of your future, like it is a familiar story you are just remembering.

Excerpt from Homer’s The Odyssey:

“Tell me, Muse, of the man of many ways, who was driven

far journeys, after he had sacked Troy’s sacred citadel.

many were they whose cities he saw, whose minds he learned of,

many the pains he suffered in his spirit on the wide sea,

struggling for his own life and the homecoming of his companions…

From some point here, goddess, daughter of Zeus, speak, and begin our story.”

The fall equinox on Wednesday, September 23rd brings the transition into Libra, the scales that balance the light and the dark. In Greek mythology, the fall was associated with the goddess Persephone’s melancholic return to the underworld to sit on the throne as Hades’ Queen. The King of Cups here signifies the tension between the masculine and feminine aspects of our spirits; between compassionate reception and aggressive action; between feeling Persephone’s resignation to fate and feeling the smoldering loneliness of Hades.

There is an initial resistance to the balance which Libran energy seeks to calibrate. We tend to mourn for a moment at the loss of Persephone’s earthly light, but such is the cycle of life. As the great poet Sappho once said, “There is no place for grief in a house which serves the Muse.

Spend these days releasing a habit which prevents you from fully embodying your emerging personality. Swim in whatever feelings arise, for the Muses can use any emotions for good purpose. This is a week to allow deep feelings to express themselves, for any agitation and sadness can be offered to the lunar eclipse as fuel for a powerful catharsis.

Carpe Diem! The 8 of Wands indicates that at some point over the weekend you will be given the opportunity to know your own intentions clearly. Recall what you were feeling during the solar eclipse on September 13th and assess how your desires have grown or shifted. The bitter sadness from earlier in the week will mix with the sweetness of joy: a powerful elixir for your progress! Watch the road open up as you embody confidence and honesty. The song that the Muses are singing will reveal itself through synchronicities and bright ideas. Everything builds to the climax of the lunar eclipse, which is when the full moon is cast in the shadow of the earth. So too will you be cast in your own shadow. This is the potent celestial moment to release all that is weighing you down and holding you back. You can use the lunar eclipse to transform your shame into honor, your listlessness into excitement, and your fear into courage. Let misunderstandings yield to clarity as you move forward into next week.2014-04-17_534f1db352fe1_LunarEclipse4-15-2014

For Brad & Dela Moontribe

Full Moon Gathering – October 2014

“Once upon an eclipse,

the sensation of pulsation

the heart bleeding vibration

filled my limbs with wanderlust!

In the crashing waves of sound

I stumbled

—and tripped hard!

And on the ground my eyes beheld

the beauty of such tiny flowers

born on the parched exhale

of howling desert winds

silver stems and filmy petals

were awake beneath the moon!

And in my joy,

my heart did break

In gravity’s grasp

my bones dissolved

into the dust

from whence I formed

my memories

were vaporous spores

And all that was and was not me

still shuddered

at the scraping chopping razors

tangled hooks and wires

bits and biting bytes

hung on an endless —-vivisection!

in agony came the primal scream

the lightning of cathartic cries

In one electric seizure

I was now… all eyes

singing in the rain of stars

and dancing veils of symmetry”

Solar Eclipse in Virgo: “Everything Changes, Nothing Perishes”

September 12th, 2015 – Virgo Solar Eclipse

“Omnia mutantur, nihil interit.”

(everything changes, nothing perishes)

― Ovid, Metamorphoses

On September 12th/13th, (depending on where you live in the world) there will be a partial solar eclipse in the sign of Virgo. If you live in Los Angeles, as I do, the partial Solar Eclipse will be exact at 11:40 p.m. on Saturday night. However, it’s transformative power will resound for the next 90 days, so use this night to meditate, contemplate and set some intentions for your own healing and success.

Virgo Solar Eclipse!

An eclipse is a New Moon that conjuncts the Sun. Therefore, the rhythm of planting seeds and birthing new conditions, routinely observed at a New Moon, becomes exponentially magnified! A solar eclipse contains the power of Metamorphosis! However, in order to fully experience great transformation in your life, you must first release the fear that accompanies change.

In ancient alchemy, a total solar eclipse was referred to as The Alchemical Marriage, which is the most sublime and powerful expression of Duality melting back into Unity through intimate exchange. (the Chinese yin-yang symbol most beautifully illustrates this melding of opposites into unity) This September 2015 event is a partial solar eclipse, so perhaps it is more of an Alchemical Triste rather than an Alchemical Marriage. Nevertheless, the point is that everything in the Universe is born from sexual union and a partial solar eclipse represents a union of opposites powerful enough to give birth to new beliefs, new emotional responses, and of course, new creativity. (As above, so below)EclipseGoddess2

It is very auspicious for this eclipse to be occurring in the sign of Virgo, which is alchemically characterized as mutable earth. Virgo, the harvest goddess who protects and nourishes the rich fertile soil, is the perfect divine energy in which to invoke metamorphosis.

The Process of Metamorphosis: A Tarot Reading.

I. The Tower (Liberation)

The rays of the catalyzing eclipse rain down upon your head! Whether you envision yourself to be confined within the walls of a prison, or softly dreaming inside of a cocoon, you will be wrenched from your stasis! You are ready for the change, whether you have consciously willed it or not. Conscious will is not needed to give birth, for it is a process that builds its own momentum and then suddenly bursts into existence. Embrace this liberation, though the air may be cold and your nerves still raw. You feel unsettled because you are unsettled.

II. Justice (Harmony)

The desire and the resistance finally merge into union. The ecstasy that follows is the realization of omnipresent energetic interrelatedness in the cosmos. In losing your singular existence, you merge with the infinite, filling your subjective reality with sparkling starlight! This is the birthplace of your new ideas; your new feelings; your new world!

EclipseHermitIII. The Hermit (Integration)

Mystical visions have come and gone. A new path has been illuminated and you will carry the memory of its terrain forever. This is the light of wisdom behind your eyes that will lead you onwards to the next phase of evolution. The Hermit is the card associated with Virgo, and she keeps a close eye on all evolutionary processes, disallowing malignant mutations and pouring her love upon all prosperous growth. Have no fear of losing anything that matters and let Virgo help you to maintain the integrity that you need to make outstanding improvements in your life.

In conclusion, allow the rhythms of the cosmos to pull you along as a dancer is pulled along by music. Let your life be a song of metamorphoses!

“My soul would sing of metamorphoses.

But since, o gods, you were the source of these

bodies becoming other bodies, breathe

your breath into my book of changes: may

the song I sing be seamless as its way

weaves from the world’s beginning to our day.”

― Ovid, Metamorphoses

Everything You Need to Know About Mercury Retrograde in Libra~Sept.-Oct. 2015

The Birth of a Dancing Star

Mercury will be retrograde from September 17th, 2015 to October 9th, 2015 in the sign of Libra. During these weeks, you will experience a powerful shift in your consciousness pertaining to harmony, balance, and diplomatic relations (Libra). These themes will have more context depending on what house Libra is in on your natal chart. Even without these details, suffice it to say that this time will pull you into a dimension where you will be required to bring your consciousness up to a new level, lest you find yourself bound up in entanglements.attachment (1)

Have NO fear! Rise to the occasion, remain receptive and prioritize peace of mind. For any survival tips you may feel you need, read up on Wu Wei.

The Mercury retrograde is the most commonly recognized astrological concept outside of sun signs. However, recognition does not indicate a depth of understanding, for most popular astrology resorts to advising people to stop all activity and assume that all technology, transportation, and communication are perilous games to be avoided. Let’s move away from that, shall we?
Archetypally speaking, Mercury is a psychopomp, meaning he enables communication between the overworld and underworld (conscious/subconscious) while dancing in between the sharp edges of logic and the frayed ends of ancient wisdom. It is this dance that allows him so much freedom from morality, for he delights in deception and thievery, laughing joyously at other’s expense, while somehow being of irreplaceable and undying service to all.attachment (6) Mercury’s game seems complex, but his intention is simple. He wants you to know more than language and commerce.

Magnum Chaos
Magnum Chaos

He wants you to remember your origins in the Protogenoi, and so he whispers in your ear to evoke the haunting vision of the Chaos that preceded all form. He does so out of genuine love, for “…one must still have chaos in oneself to give birth to a dancing star…” (more on how harmony can be found in the surrender to chaos)
attachment (2)

I say unto you: one must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star. I say unto you: you still have chaos in yourselves.” – Freidrich Nietzsche (Thus spoke Zarathustra)

As Mercury retrogrades, which happens three or four times a year, it is not a sabotage of all you are trying to accomplish. Rather, this is Mercury’s time to modulate the key of his hypnogogic song so that you will become more receptive to your primal creative power and your own poetic genius which channels the essence of dancing stars! In Libra, Mercury’s retrograde will allow you to carefully sort through your thoughts, for they are the shadows of deeper feelings. In other words, this retrograde encourages subconscious material to rise to the surface of your conscious mind, which smooths your path and softens your resistance to change. Meditate on metamorphosis, finding that you are both the light and darkness; the emptiness and the form.

Please, enjoy the Mercury Retrograde for what it is: a passionate dance with the primal forces of creation!
